Cold Therapy - The Dos & Don'ts
31 October 2018
When to use Cold Therapy
As a general rule of thumb, Cold Therapy should be used to reduce pain and swelling/ inflammation after an injury/ strain.
Heat should be avoided at this stage as it may add to the body's natural inflammatory process and further aggravate pain receptors which in turn will increase discomfort.
How Cold Therapy works
Cold Therapy works by reducing blood flow to a particular area, which can significantly reduce inflammation and swelling that causes pain, especially around a joint or a tendon. It can temporarily reduce nerve activity, which can also relieve pain.
Use of Cold Therapy Products
Cold Therapy should be used for short periods of time, several times a day. Ten to 15 minutes is good, and no more than 20 minutes of cold therapy should be used at a time to prevent nerve, tissue, and skin damage. You can elevate the affected area for best results.
The RICE principles should be also used -
1. Rest
2. Ice
3. Compression
4. Elevation
