Fleming Medical and Limerick Community Unite to Boost School Safety
26 March 2025

Installed on 25th March, the AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is a significant addition to the school’s emergency response measures, accompanied by training for staff and community members.

The Importance of Defibrillators
Cardiac arrest can occur suddenly, and access to a defibrillator within the first few minutes can significantly improve survival rates. Mark Fleming, founder of Fleming Medical, emphasised the need for widespread access to such devices: "Every school, workplace, and community space should have access to an AED. Our goal is to ensure lifesaving equipment is available where it’s needed most, improving emergency preparedness across Ireland."
This donation aligns with Fleming Medical’s broader initiative to place AEDs in schools, workplaces, and public spaces nationwide. The company hopes to encourage other organisations to invest in emergency preparedness and strengthen community health resources.
Limerick Community Special School, which opened in 2024 under the patronage of the Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board, provides specialised education for students with Moderate Intellectual Disabilities, Autism and complex needs.

Principal Deirdre Bourke highlighted the importance of the donation, stating: "Emergencies in a special education setting can present unique challenges. Having a defibrillator on-site ensures we are prepared for medical emergencies where every second counts.
We're not just receiving a machine; we're being gifted the ability to provide immediate care, which in some instances, could mean saving a life."
